KARACHI: Hundreds of school teachers on Wednesday rallied toward Bilawal House against non-payment of salaries but police stopped them near Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park by blocking road with containers.
Heavy contingents of anti-riot police armed with water cannons was deployed to avert any untoward incident. The male and female teachers were chanting slogans in favour of their demands, particularly payment of 20-month salaries.
However, they dispersed peacefully after successful negotiation with DC and SSP South who assured them of resolving their issue.
Talking to PPI on the occasion, Deputy Secretary New Teachers Action Committee (NTAC) Sharfuddin said that Sindh government had appointed more than 3000 Sindhi and Arabic language teachers in lower secondary and secondary schools in August 2012 but it was reluctant to pay salaries to them.
He said that all those teachers had been issued appointment letters and duty joining reports and they were regularly performing duty but were deprived of salaries even after 20 months.
He said that the DC and SSP had assured them that within two days, top PPP leadership would call NTAC delegation for meeting and within 10 days, the issue of salaries would be resolved.
He said that on that assurance, they were ending their protest but if salaries issues did not resolved in 10 days, the teachers would again march toward Bilawal House.
