Cough, flue on the rise across Sindh as chill sets in


KARACHI: The infectious diseases like cough and flue with fever are on the rise in Sindh as chill sets. The worst hit are the people of interior Sindh while Karachiites are also affected by these viral diseases.

The government needs to provide healthcare facilities to the people at the hospitals by providing free of cost medicines. The rush of patients of these diseases is being witnessed at hospitals in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Larkana divisions, where healthcare facilities are not to the mark.

The acute shortage of government hospitals is also causing miseries to the patients because they could not get proper medication from doctors due to influx of patients. Civil Hospital Karachi, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital have could not meet need of all patients.

There is also need to open more big hospitals in Karachi while every district headquarter in Sindh should have big hospital like Civil Hospital Karachi.

A doctor, Pir Attaullah Gilani, at Pingrio, said that people had taken no steps to save children from cold season. He said that children have been ignored of warm clothes despite threat of diseases looms large over the region. He said that cold nights in interior Sindh could badly affect health of people, particularly children who are sleeping under open sky. “This could lead them to severe fever, cough and flue,” he added.

Another doctor, Fahim, from Khairpur Miris told PPI that chest cold, cough, flu are caused by viruses in cold season. “Allergies, asthma, acid reflux, dry air, and smoking are common causes of coughs,” he said.

He said the highest incidence of flu is among school-age children and the second-highest is among children under five years of age.

The arrival of winter has made life more difficult for people because they face lack of medicines and doctors at the hospitals. The rising price hike has also compelled people to avoid taking costly medicines while hospitals could also not provide even medicines of cough and cold to poor patients despite allocations of funds in this regard, he said.

“Sindh government direly needs to expand healthcare for the thousands people, particularly children who may fall victim to winter diseases. It also needs to expand hospital network across the province to ensure healthy population,” he concluded.
