KARACHI: Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) on Monday demolished an illegal water hydrant at Gujjar River in Nazimabad. The action was taken under the supervision of DMD Technical, Najam Alam Siddiqui, while Deputy Commissioner Central Dr Syed Saifur Rehman, SSP Musadiq Haider, DSP Chaudhry Zulfiqar were also present on the occasion.
During the raid, it was revealed that more than 5 million gallons of water was stolen through this illegal hydrant that comprised illegal connections and underground tanks. The water was supplied from these tanks to different industrial units, causing water shortage in the area and revenue loss to KWSB.
The water board officials destroyed all equipment used for illegal water supply through heavy machinery and seized other material from the spot, while a bridge used for stealing water was also razed during the action.
Moreover, more illegal connections including four 8 inch lines, four 6 inch lines, and five 4 inch lines were also cut during the action.
The action against the hydrant would increase water supply in Baldia, Jahanabad, Shershah, PAF Masroor, Mauripur, Shams Village and other adjoining areas.
Najam requested residents of the area to inform KWSB in case the hydrant is made re-operative.
Talking to PPI, KWSB Spokesman Nazir said that the actions were taken after Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon directed KWSB authorities to remove illegal hydrants from the city and streamline better water supply to Karachiites.
