MRI machine in CHK awaits repair


Karachi: The new Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI machine of Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) has been non-functional for six months and waiting for repair. However, due to the delay in repair patients are facing problems.

CHK sources said that a new MRI machine was brought about one year ago and administration started running it on trial basis; however, it soon developed some problems.

They said sunder the warranty the machine could be repaired, but due to the apathy of CHK administration it still lays out of order for last six months.

According to the sources majority of admitted and OPD patients of different wards are compelled to pay heavy fees in account of their tests carried out by some private hospitals in the city. The private hospitals normally charge Rs 5,000 to 20,000 for MRI test, putting unnecessary burden on the pockets poor people.

A large number of patients visit the CHK from different areas of Karachi, Sindh and Balochistan province for treatment on daily basis. Patients are being tested for MRI with complaints like backbone, brain and bones problems. In past they used to get this facility free of charge at the CHK. The patients have demanded of the CHK administration and other high-up for early repairing of machine.

Medical Superintendent (MS) of CHK Prof Dr M Saeed Quraishi when contacted said the CHK administration has been in constant contact with the supplier for early repairing of MRI machine as per agreement. He said there no any fault in machine, but due shortage Helium Gas in market the company administration unable make it functional.

He said concerned company had given 15th December date for provision gas and hoped that machine would start operating soon if the company arranges gas for machine.

President Pakistan Paramedical Staff Association (PPSA) Karachi Division Nazeer Abbasi said government hospital administrations with nexus of private hospital mafia are involved in such cases to benefit to private hospitals.

He demanded of the health secretary and other high-ups to probe into the deliberate delay in MRI repairing by the administration of hospital and take action against involved officials.
