LAHORE: Ameer, Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan, Sirajul Haq, has said that the Protection of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill was an attempt to smear the face of democracy. In a statement issued from Mansoora on Thursday, he said the PPO would usurp the basic rights available to the citizens under the constitution. He said that way for the worst form of dictatorship was being prepared through this enactment. He said such an enactment in a democratic era was undemocratic and inhuman which could not be adequately condemned. He rejected the Bill and urged all political parties and human rights bodies in the country to raise voice against it.
Haq asked if there was any justification in detaining any citizen for 60 days merely on suspicion. He said that giving unlimited powers to the police and security institutions to shoot would create an atmosphere of fear and harassment and the law could be used to gag the political opponents of the government.
JI Information Secretary Ameerul Azeem, in a statement, expressed strong reservations over the provisions vesting a grade 15 officer with the powers to give shooting orders. He said the rulers were paving way for civil war in the country under the cover of anti terrorism.
He said that government officials from different departments were staging protests against state repression and the government seemed to have find out a novel way to stop their protest.
