Meeting held to review SME policy

Karachi: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises held a meeting with the consultants of USAID Pakistan Firms Project to review the SME Policy 2007, particularly the benefits of its implemented project.

President UNISAME welcomed Dr Ernest Koch, Adeel Faheem and Imran Muhammad Khan and apprised them of the good work done by the State Bank of Pakistan SBP, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority SMEDA and the Business Support Fund BSF.

The consultants of USAID questioned the non implementation of the SME institutions of Export House, Joint Venture Fund, Ombudsman, Credit Guarantee Insurance, Technical Institute and SME Fund. They emphasized the need for these institutions for facilitating the sector.

Thaver sought help for the establishment of SME Export House and SME Business Council under USAID Firms Projects and the consultants asked for the detailed application from UNISAME and SMEDA for consideration on priority. He also pinpointed the technological gap and requested support from the USAID for transfer of technology for the sectors suffering due to the gap.

He demanded the placement of SMEDA directly under the cabinet division and separate ministry for SME promotion as in other countries of the world. He said there is urgent need for increasing yield per acre in the farm sector. He thanked USAID for help in the fruits sector and requested for help in upgrading the rice, wheat, maize, cotton, vegetables and seeds sectors.
