OIC condemns attack on election campaign rally in Afghanistan

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned the attack on a People's Assembly (Wolesi Jirga) election campaign rally in Rustaq District of Takhar province in Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 30 others.

OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen extended his condolences to the government and people of Afghanistan and wished a quick recovery to the survivors.

Al-Othaimeen appealed to the government, political leaders and the people of Afghanistan to exercise restraint, uphold the sacred goals of national unity and reconciliation above personal or group interests, and demonstrate stronger commitment and determination to realizing free and fair elections with highest voter participation.

According to media reports, a motorcycle rigged with explosives detonated at the election rally in the city of Rustaq. Two security personnel were also among those killed in the explosion.
