US (USAID Sponsors Study Tour for Energy Sector Officials to USA)

Islamabad: The USAID has organized a study tour for fourteen senior managers from Pakistan’s government-owned power distribution companies (DISCOs) and National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to United States of America.

Exposure to efficient energy operations is intended to teach Pakistani energy professionals how to strengthen commercial operations and customer service, as well as professional development at DISCOs which are responsible for managing the distribution of energy throughout the country.

“The United States Government is assisting the Government of Pakistan in improving the power distribution system. We work with public sector power sector distribution companies to improve their operations, reduce losses and ultimately to make sure that Pakistani citizens have a more reliable supply of power.” said Craig VanDevelde, Chief of Party of USAID Power Distribution Program at the pre-departure orientation ceremony.

USAID, under its Power Distribution Program, has conducted six exchange programs to Turkey, South Africa, Australia, UAE and the United States. Approximately 12 DISCO managers were selected for each program and all nine DISCOS throughout the country were able to participate.

The USAID Power Distribution Program is a five year, USAID-funded program aimed at working jointly with government-owned DISCOs in Pakistan to improve their performance in terms of a reduction in losses and improvement in both revenues and customer services, to bring them to the level of well-run utilities in other progressive countries.
