Young swimmer’s case: SHC summons President PSF for disobeying its orders

KARACHI: Sindh High Court SHC on Wednesday issued a notice to President Pakistan Swimming Federation PSF on contempt of court application, directing him to appear before it for disobeying the court orders regarding the considering young swimmer Areeba Shaikh for upcoming third Islamic Solidarity Games in Indonesia.

A division bench of SHC headed by Justice Faisal Arab was seized with hearing of the contempt of court application filed by Areeba Sheikh, who sought action against PSF president for defying the court orders.

Earlier the bench directed the respondent PSA president, retired Maj Majid Wasim, to consider the young swimmer for upcoming third Islamic Solidarity Games and expedite the matter if she caters to the need of merit as the Games were scheduled to start from Sept 22.

These directions came on petition filed by a 12yearold swimmer, who has participated in many national and international competitions and won several medals including three gold medals, as many silvers and two bronze medals in the most recent open age National Games held in July 2013 in Islamabad.

The young swimmer, represented by Advocate Mohammad Zaheer, had stated in petition that she is a swimmer of national stature but was completely ignored by selecting authorities despite her better performance and higher merit and best past sports record.

He said that the Pakistan Olympic Association POA on Aug 17 announced that a 96member Pakistan contingent would participate in the third Islamic Solidarity Games starting in Indonesia from Sept 22, 2013 and advised federations of athletics, badminton, basketball, karate, swimming, tennis and volleyball to select the players on pure merit and impart best possible training to the athletes to prepare them for winning maximum number of medals in the forthcoming event.

She submitted that she would have certainly been a core member of the swimming squad, if the respondents selected the members on the basis of their recent performance as she emerged number two in recent open age National Games held in Islamabad in July, 2013.

She prayed to the court to direct the respondent to include the name of the petitioner in the squad on the basis of her recent performances. Filing contempt of court application, she stated that despite issuance of directives to PSF president, she still has not been contacted and PSF president failed to obey the court orders. Hence, she prayed to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the PSF president.

After hearing the arguments, the bench issued the notice to PSF president and directed him to appear before it on next hearing of the case.

Hearing of the case was put off to Sept 27.
